Publish Date : 25-Jul-2019

The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank approved on Friday, July 19, 2019 in Abidjan, a financing of $ 36.4 million for Burkina Faso, for the implementation of the Development and Development Project of the plain of Lraba (PAVAL) for the benefit of populations, mostly women.

The project consists in the valorization of the waters of the Niofila dam, allowing the irrigation by the furrows (an irrigation technique) of 1 410 hectares and the development of value chains at the level of the plain of Lraba. Its main objective is to strengthen the resilience of people to food and nutrition insecurity as well as to increase irrigated agricultural production and boost agricultural transformation.

Thus, the PAVAL must contribute to the effective empowerment of women through the allocation of 50% of parcels managed to women and their land security with the issuance of land acts on their behalf and support for more than 100 micro -rural enterprises run by women. Co-financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the project will be implemented over five years and will reach approximately 50,000 beneficiaries.

The PAVAL is part of Burkina Faso's National Plan for Economic and Social Development (PNDES 2016-2020) and Pillar 2 of the Bank's strategic document in Burkina Faso (CSP 2017-2021), relating to the development of agricultural sector for inclusive growth.

The objectives of the project fit with two of the Bank's five priority objectives or "High 5": "Feeding Africa" by 2025 and "Improving the quality of life of African populations"
