Together with a team of leading German industrial companies Sikorsky, a company of Lockheed Martin, and Rheinmetall compete with the helicopter CH-53K (also called "King Stallion") for the successor in the procurement project "Heavy Transport Helicopter" (STH ). If the application is successful, the US company and the German defense group want to set up a logistics center and a Fleet Management Center at Leipzig / Halle Airport. This would mean the location of numerous jobs and considerably strengthen the business location Leipzig and the local airport. The Bundeswehr wants to decide in early 2021 on the award of the new transport helicopter.
Rheinmetall and the renowned US helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky have already informed representatives of state policy, Saxony's economic development and the airport operator about their plans to build the center necessary for the operation of the helicopter in Leipzig.
Mike Schmidt, Managing Director Rheinmetall Aviation Services GmbH: "We are in advanced talks about a logistics and project control hub at Leipzig Airport. We are pleased about the very positive response so far. In the case of a successful application, the supply of the new German Federal Armed Forces transport helicopter as well as the project management could be carried out centrally and efficiently in Leipzig. At Rheinmetall Aviation Services, we are also thinking about relocating our headquarters to Leipzig. For the region, the project would mean a settlement of important industry and related jobs. "
Christian Albrecht, International Business Development Manager at Sikorsky and former captain at Helicopter Squadron 64 in Holzdorf, added: "We have built up a strong industrial team in Germany that will ensure the availability of the CH-53K fleet to the Luftwaffe. 70 percent of the maintenance work is to take place in Germany. With our plans for a hub at Leipzig Airport, we are laying the foundation to offer the Bundeswehr a helicopter that has been reliable for decades. "
In addition to the use of existing hangars and storage areas at Leipzig / Halle Airport, plans by Sikorsky and Rheinmetall provide for the accommodation of a fleet management center in which technical data of the helicopters can be evaluated. The CH-53K is the most advanced, intelligent and powerful heavy transport helicopter ever built. As such, the helicopter has an integrated "Health & Monitoring System" (IVHMS) that monitors the operation of the entire aircraft, detects the maintenance needs of key components, and simplifies their maintenance. In addition, parts of the project team are to be located directly at the airport.
