The Council of the Regional Government of Madrid has given the green light to several contracts to guarantee the service and quality of the public enterprise. The Madrid underground has dropped its electricity consumption by 25% over recent years thanks to its savings and energy efficiency plans. The company will also allocate 8.5 million euros to acquire 179.5 kilometres of track
Metro de Madrid, a public enterprise of the Regional Government of Madrid, has awarded its electricity supply for the next two years for 92 million euros to the company Iberdrola Clientes, according to reports to the Council today. Estimated consumption for the high voltage supply is 1,154.7 gigawatt hours (GWh) and 11.36 GWh for low voltage.
Electricity is fundamental to provide the underground service, both for trains and for other facilities. The underground uses high-voltage energy distributed through its internal network of auxiliary services to power all its facilities.
This high voltage electricity is also transformed and rectified to power trains, which is the largest share of the consumption, at around 90% of the total. In the case of low-voltage energy, the public enterprise uses it as secondary power as a back-up and for some offices.
Thanks to the Energy Saving Plan 2012-2017 and the current Energy Efficiency Plan, Metro de Madrid the public enterprise of the Madrid underground has reduced electricity consumption in daily operations by 25%. Specifically, this consumption has dropped from 750 gigawatt hours in 2011 to 562 in 2018. In just three years, the Madrid underground has saved the equivalent of the annual consumption of 110,000 households.
RENOVATION OF RAIL TRACK
The Council of the Regional Government of Madrid also gave the green light today to the acquisition by Metro de Madrid of the supply of close to 10,000 rails, amounting to 179.5 kilometres, for the sum of 8.5 million euros. Under this contract, the public enterprise will have enough material to renovate parts of the track scheduled for the next four years.
Maintenance of installations is one of the priorities of Metro de Madrid, with the aim of ensuring a quality, safe and reliable service. The Madrid underground network has a total of 1,175.6 kilometres of track.
The state and durability of track is very variable depending on the wear and tear it suffers, from the existing geometry to the interaction between the wheels and the track. Hence, track renovation through preventive maintenance is essential to preserve security for train movements and to guarantee a quality service.
Finally, the Council of the Regional Government of Madrid also approved the award today for the contract for the supply and installation of prefabricated modules at the Metro de Madrid depots in Ventas and Canillejas, for a sum in excess of 3 million euros.
