Projects from five Portuguese non-governmental organizations will participate in Mozambique's reconstruction effort following the hurricane Idai and Kenneth, in an investment of 1.9 million euros, announced the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, at the opening of the annual seminar on cooperation, culture and language promoted by the Camoes Institute in Lisbon.
"The five projects that have been approved will mobilize 1,950 million euros," said the Minister, adding that they stem from applications approved under the Mozambique Reconstruction and Development Support Fund.
The fund, created by the Portuguese government following the Idai and Kenneth cyclones that hit central Mozambique, including the Beira region in 2019, killed nearly 700 people and destroyed many infrastructures, affecting about 2.2 million people.
Santos Silva underlined the quality of the proposals submitted and highlighted the high number of applications submitted under the fund, consisting of state money, including municipalities, associations, foundations and companies.
Education, health and food safety
Education, health and food security are the main sectors for the projects of the Supporting, Faith and Cooperation Foundation, Health 4 Moz, Helpo and Oikos organizations.
We will be much better off knowing that rural communities will benefit from intervention to improve their levels of nutrition, hygiene and public sanitation in Sofala and Dondo. We will be more pleased that we can support the rehabilitation of educational facilities and spaces in Sofala and Beira city, he said.
The Minister highlighted the fact that it was also possible to continue the Hospital da Beira reconstruction and capacity building project, as well as to carry out a project to rebuild health infrastructure in the Dombe region. There will also be a project for the reconstruction of the agricultural sector in Sofala and Cabo Delgado, Santos Silva added.
Cooperation contributes to peace
Speaking at the Cames Institute's annual seminar on cooperation, culture and language, the Minister underlined the importance of development cooperation as an instrument for peace, stating that those who cooperate do not make war, on the contrary contribute to peace.
The cooperation, culture and language weekly, which runs from 8 to 9 January, is intended for development attachs, sectoral development advisers and advisers, bilateral and delegated cooperation project coordinators, cultural attachs and advisers, chairs, readers and coordinators of teaching Portuguese abroad and deputies.
The meeting takes stock of the previous year and presents the priorities of Portuguese foreign policy on cooperation, culture and language for the following year.
