According to Mr. Manohar Parrikar, Goa Chief Minister all concerns for the greenfield airport in Goa had been addressed, and that the global tenders for the project would be invited during the month of September.
The airport project in Mopa, north Goa, had secured the Centre’s in-principle approval in March 2000 and since then it did not progress further due to land acquisition woes and litigation.
Opposing the new airport project, politicians from south Goa says that the project would considerably increase travel time to the new airport from south Goa.
CM stated that completion of 95 per cent of the land acquisition will be done by July, and global tenders would be invited in September.
Villagers affected with the move are not happy with the government’s acquisition and rehabilitation plans.
Siddarth Karapurkar of the Goan Farmers Collective said, “The government is not even offering market rates.â€
The existing airport at Dabolim, Goa serves as a naval base and is presently being upgraded and addition of the a new terminal is carried out with an investment of Rs 500 crore. Despite of these upgrades the airport has capacity to handle only 4.5 million passengers.
According to the estimates of the state government, the Mopa airport upon completion of all its phases will have capacity to handle 30 million passengers by 2045.
