Germany : STADLER PANKOW bags Berlin U-Bahn contract
Publish Date : 13-Jul-2012
Stadler Pankow is been contracted by Berlin transport authority BVG to manufacture two small-profile metro trains as a pilot to replace the existing A3L71 fleet.
By 2015, the pre-production Type IK trainsets is scheduled for delivery for trials and if proved to be successful, there is further an option for series production of around 34 more trainsets which will be delivered from 2017.
The four-car units will come with wide gangways and body sides curving outwards for optimizing internal space within the constraints of the tunnel profiles.
According to Stadler, the trains is expected to have around 80 longitudinal seats, standing capacity of around 250 passengers and multi-purpose areas to facilitate wheelchairs, bulky luggage and pushchairs.
The contract comes as an outcome of an open tender.
