Ireland : Northern Ireland firms get rail contract worth $17 million
Publish Date : 13-Jul-2012
Major track engineering project, worth more than $17 million, has been handed over to Northern Ireland contractors – McLaughlin Harvey Ltd and McCann BAM Rail JV.
The project is part of Translink’s Coleraine to Derry track renewals project, which has received funds of more than $50 million from the Department for Regional Development (DRD).
While McCann BAM Rail JV will look after the full track relay between Coleraine and Castlerock and Eglinton and Derry, McLaughlin Harvey Ltd will ensure the track safety and look after the improvement work involving track re-railing between Umbra and Eglinton.
Eugene O’Brien, Head of Track at Translink NI Railways, while announcing the contracts, said, “Commuters will see that their travel is more comfortable, trains will be quieter and the overall performance of the line will be maintained at a high level.â€
He added, “The project will, however, need complete closure of the line between Coleraine and Derry/Londonderry from July 29 until the spring next year.â€
A temporary schedule will be put up for passengers travelling on this route, and alternative mode of transportation will also be provided.
“Commuter safety has always topped our list and therefore we request them to be alert and use railway crossings safely,†O’Brien said.
