United States : US NAVY $43 million contract modification awarded to NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING
Publish Date : 23-Jul-2012
The U.S. Navy has awarded a $43.4 million modification to an earlier awarded contract to Newport News Shipbuilding, part of Huntington Ingalls Industries, a spin-off of Northrop Grumman.
The amount would be utilised for buying supplies for the construction of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), a Gerald R. Ford-class carrier, a new line of ships that would assit the Navy in reducing operating costs.
Mike Shawcross, vice president of the CVN 79 project said, \"This award enables us to continue our construction preparation efforts, allowing us to provide a more efficient approach to building the ship that supports one of our most important goals, affordability.\"
With the funds, major, long-lead-time equipment, such as the ship’s elevator machinery and large pumps will be purchased. Under a construction preparation contract, NNS is carrying out work on CVN 79.
