Publish Date : 14-Aug-2012
The recent successful agreement on oil transit fees between Sudan and South Sudan has been welcomed by Malaysia.
A statement issued by Wisma Putra, said: “Malaysia believes that this success will chart a new development in good bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries. It is of paramount importance for the issue to be resolved amicably and Malaysia encourages both sides to continue building on the strong momentum to move forward.â€
Considering this, Malaysia moreover applauded the commitment of President Omar Hassan Ahmed al-Bashir of Sudan and President Salva Kiir Mayardiit of South Sudan in reaching a mutual understanding on the issue.
“Malaysia also hopes that both countries will continue their negotiations to resolve disputes under the auspices of the African Union in finding a mutually acceptable solution to the remaining post-separation issues,†the statement further said. “Malaysia believes that this progress will pave the way for lasting peace and stability for both Sudan and South Sudan.â€
Sudan is among 30 countries where Malaysia’s national oil firm, Petroleum Nasional Berhad (Petronas), performs oil exploration activities.
