THE telecoms unit of Scottish Hydro-owner SSE has secured a contract worth 30 million pounds to provide a fibre optic network.
Under the deal that spans a decade, SSE Telecoms will offer 6,500km of network to over 30 education sites linked to the \"Janet\" network infrastructure.
The network links UK universities, colleges and research councils and some 18 million end-users are presently being served by the Janet network.
The contract, which is to create the next generation network dubbed as Janet6, is the largest ever won by SSE Telecoms.
SSE’s managing director of networks, Mark Mathieson, statd : \"This contract clearly demonstrates the strength and depth of SSE’s telecoms business which was able to provide the flexibility and responsiveness essential for supporting Janet as it evolves its communication infrastructure to meet the education community’s future demands\".
He added : \"SSE Telecoms is looking forward to using this contract to break new ground in the telecommunications arena.\"
Head of strategic technologies at Janet, Jeremy Sharp, said: \"The Janet6 project will ensure that the UK stays at the forefront of research and education networking globally.\"
He added : \"The fibre infrastructure that underpins Janet6 is the foundation upon which the network is built\".
