Saudi Arabia : $115m Haramain substation contract for ABB
Publish Date : 09-Oct-2012
A contract worth $115m was awarded to power automation group ABB to provide a flexible alternating current transmission system solution (FACTS) to Saudi Electricity Company.
With this contract, ABB will be responsible to upgrade reliability of power supply as well as encourage the transmission grid that feeds major railway interconnections in Saudi Arabia.
Being part of the solution at the Haramain High Speed Railway\'s (HHR) 380kV substations, ABB will have to design, supply, install and commission two identical static var compensators (SVCs). Hopefully, the installations would support the railway interconnection between the cities of Makkah and Madinah.
“This solution will help strengthen the transmission grid and enhance reliability of power supply to important rail links being developed in Saudi Arabia,†said, ABB Power Systems division head Brice Koch.
He added, “SVCs are part of ABB\'s family of FACTS technologies, which help enhance the capacity and flexibility of power transmission systems and also contribute to the development of smarter grids.â€
