United States : Lonza gets US$9.5m US contract
Publish Date : 11-Oct-2012
LONZA Ltd on Wednesday said it has been awarded a five-year agreement worth US$9.5 million (S$6.15 million) by the National Institutes of Health Center for Regenerative Medicine based in Bethesda, Maryland.
Under the contract, the supplier to pharmaceutical, health-care and life science industries will generate induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), which are cells with the potential to differentiate and become any fetal or adult cell type.
Lonza is also contracted to manufacture such clinical-grade iPSC-derived cell types.
The production of clinical-grade iPSCs is considered a critical component to realising the therapeutic potential of this type of stem cells; iPSC technology thus paves the way for cell-transplantation therapies to treat degenerative diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson\'s disease and some cardiovascular diseases.
