India : GVK awarded Australian project for the Abbot Point port development

Publish Date : 16-Oct-2012

Australian Government has approved GVK Group for the development of port at Abbot Point, Queensland. GVK will be developing and operating Dual Quadrant Shiploaders at Terminal 3.

GVK said these facilities need a reduced area and structure compared to the conventional shiploaders and wharf design.

The Quadrant shiploaders means that effect during construction and operation will be considerably less than that envisaged in its approvals.

There are probabilities for reduced noise and seabed disturbance, lower visual and noise impacts during operation, and reduced carbon footprint due to the absence of surge bins and conveyors.

The Hyderabad-based diversified infrastructure firm has planned an investment outlay of about $10 billion for the Alpha coal project. The project includes a thermal coal mine in Galilee basin, a 495-km railway line, terminal and port facilities at Abbot Point.

Agreements have been reached with many of the landowners and rail infrastructure accreditation has also been obtained.

The infrastructure will facilitate coal transport for GVK as well as allow for third party rail haulage from other Galilee Basin projects and Bowen Basin coal producers.

The GVK rail corridor from the Galilee Basin to the Abbot Point is expected to create opportunities for mines in the region for transporting their product to the port.

The initial capacity and approvals are for 60 million tonnes a year, which is scalable to 120 mt a year on the single line.
