South Africa : MINISTER - The SOUTH AFRICAN government has approved 18 infrastructure projects worth R4 trillion

Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel has announced that the South African government has approved 18 infrastructure projects for implementation in the next 10 to 20 years.

The minister said 645 projects were identified by the Presidential Infrastructure Co-ordinating Commission of which 18 strategic construction projects have been approved.

The projects are expected to cost R4 trillion over the next 15 years.

Patel presented the government proposals at the Presidential Infrastructure Investment Conference in Johannesburg and stressed that public-private-partnership are key to realize these projects.

The government intends to build a Durban-Free State-Gauteng logistics and industrial corridor to bolster the logistics and transport corridor between the country\'s main industrial hubs.

A total number of 122 nursing colleges would come up nationally and two new universities would be established in Mpumalanga and Northern Cape.

Six hospitals would be opened to boost the public health system.

Work to improve road infrastructure, housing development, information technology and linking rural infrastructure with cities are among the other projects.
