Canada : Affordable Seniors’ Housing Project Opens In Prince Albert

Publish Date : 26-Nov-2012

A new $744,000, four-unit affordable rental housing project is officially open in Prince Albert, thanks to a partnership between the Government of Saskatchewan and Prince Albert Community Housing Society Inc. (PACHSI). The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) provided $520,500 in funding, with PACHSI contributing $223,500.

\"As noted in the recently released Saskatchewan Plan for Growth, our government\'s goal is to capture the opportunities and meet the challenges of a growing province,\" Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. \"We are working hard to meet Saskatchewan\'s housing challenges head-on, and our partnership with Prince Albert Community Housing Society Inc. is making great things happen right here in Prince Albert.\"

\"We are very pleased to partner with the Saskatchewan government to provide four more rental units in Prince Albert,\" PACHSI Manager Linda Boyer said. \"These particular homes will provide grandparents raising their grandchildren the opportunity to have a safe, secure and affordable place to call home. This particular complex was constructed in an under-utilized area of Prince Albert with the purpose of helping to improve the area. Thank you to the board of directors for their never-ending support and determination to help increase affordable housing in Prince Albert, and to the employees of PACHSI for their hard work and dedication.\"

Located at 701 - 17th Street West in Prince Albert, the project consists of a four-plex style building with each unit containing three bedrooms. The project was undertaken by PACHSI to help meet a growing need for housing of seniors\' households with dependents, which traditional seniors housing does not accommodate.

The province continues to work with the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors to develop new housing opportunities in Prince Albert. Since November 2007, 132 affordable rental units have been completed in the community, including 26 units for seniors.

PACHSI, an active non-profit corporation established in 1977, owns and manages a housing portfolio of nearly 367 rental units housing approximately 1,100 adults and children in Prince Albert.
