United States : SUGAR CO. workers disapprove contract again
Publish Date : 04-Dec-2012
American Crystal Sugar Co. workers have disapproved a contract again and this is the fourth time.
According to the contract opponents, the sugar beet processor\'s five-year contract offer would reduce health care benefits and undermine job security and seniority protections.
The firm says the offer would boost the workers\' pay by 17% in five years when a $2,000 signing bonus is taken into account.
According to the leaders of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International union, the workers voted 55 per cent to reject the administration\'s contract offer.
The head of a union local that represents workers at three American Crystal plants, John Riskey, said : \'By now it should be clear that (company CEO) Dave Berg and Crystal Sugar’s management team has no interest in ending a fiscally irresponsible lockout that has been disastrous to farm shareholders, put the federal sugar programme in jeopardy, and hurt countless families in the Red River Valley\'.
