Maldives : MALDIVIAN GOVT. to revoke a USD511 M deal
Publish Date : 11-Dec-2012
The Maldivian government has taken back control of the island country\'s main international airport from an Indo-Malaysian group.
Since they were offered a 25-year lease by the country\'s government under the former president Mohamed Nasheed in 2010, India\'s construction and engineering company GMR and Malaysian Airports Holding Berhad had been supervising the expansion, modernisation and operation of Ibrahim Nassir International Airport.
The current President Mohammed Waheed Hassan has announced that his government would revoke the USD511 million (Dh1.87 billion) deal.
His press secretary Masood Imad has promised that the transfer of airport operations to the state-owned Maldivian Airport Company Limited (MACL) would be \"smooth and seamless\".
