United States : DoD announces $694 Million transportation contract

The U.S. Department of Defense, on Thursday, announced the award of a contract worth nearly $694 million “for international commercial scheduled air cargo transportation services†to a dozen firms having operations in the air cargo sector.
The contract is classified as “indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity†(IDIQ) and fixed-price.
The 12 involved companies are Alaska Airlines, Atlas Air, Federal Express , UPS, US Airways, along with seven smaller, privately held firms.
All these firms will provide “time definite, door-to-door transportation service for less than full pallet loads ... including the movement of general, refrigerated, oversized, hazardous material (HAZMAT), and life and death cargo services for both domestic and international shipments.â€
Beginning from 1 February, the contract’s initial period runs from Jan 31, 2014, following with one-year extensions.
According to DoD, in case if all five one-year terms are exercised, the maximum ceiling value of the program is $694 million including all 12 contractors, with every contractor guaranteed a minimum award amount of $2,500.
