United States : HOLLYWOOD moves into second phase of drainage improvement project

Publish Date : 07-Jan-2013

To address flooding issues in the city, Hollywood is initiating the second phase of a drainage improvement project.

The venture will concentrate on the regions between North 14th and 16th avenues between Harding and Lee streets. To make the repairs, the city has appointed GPE Engineering & General Contractors.

City spokeswoman Raelin Storey said: \"We will be analyzing and assessing the existing pipes, cleaning out dirt and debris, and we will also be doing additional repairs on these pipes as needed. It is a low area that is near our wastewater treatment plant. … The good news is that we have a [state] grant that will help us.\"

The project, worth $345,000, will be finished in nearly nine months.

The region west of 14th Avenue and south of Sheridan Street has had flooding troubles for years. To deal with this, the city has done several repairs on a parcel of county-owned land adjacent to West Lake Park. According to Storey, disruptions resulting from the project will be reduced.

She said: \"We don\'t anticipate a big impact on the residents. If we find some pipes that need to be replaced, then we may have to deal with road closures, but at this point, we don\'t anticipate that to be a factor. … We hope that this alleviates some of the lower-level flooding in that area. We think that we have made a dent in it, but we think that we can continue to do a whole lot more.\"
