The tender for a 49 percent in state-owned operator Hondutel has been extended by the government of Honduras.

Originally, opening of the bid was to be done on 2 January 2013, which is now been extended to 25 January. Already, 13 operators have bought the tender documents.

Hondutel had launched a tender for a minority stake in its lately formed mobile subsidiary Empresa Hondurena de Telefonia Movil (Movitelh), in December 2012.

The firm had called for interested companies to acquire the tender documents by 18 December for HNL 10,000 (nearly US$ 500).

After completing the tender procedure, Movitelh will become the first public-private firm to operate on the Honduran telecoms market.

Nearly 100,000 existing mobile telephony customers of Hondutel will be transferred to Movitelh.
