AT&T has announced a deal to acquire the Alltel U.S. wireless operations, aiming at strengthening its spectrum in rural areas of six states, including Ohio.

The deal is worth $780 million, and is subject to approval by federal regulators.

The Dallas telecommunication company is to purchase the licenses, retail stores and network assets, together with about 585,000 subscribers, from Atlantic Tele-Network Inc.
