United States : $138 MILLION wind farm will be constructed by Florida company

Publish Date : 19-Feb-2013

A $138 million wind farm in parts of Jefferson and Gage counties will be constructed by Florida company, centered near Nebraska 8 in the southern part of Jefferson and Gage counties.

75 megawatts of electricity from 44 turbines will be generated by Steele Flats Wind Project, to be built by NextEra Energy Resources of Juno Beach, Fla.

An agreement is permitted between Nebraska Public Power District Board management and Florida company to buy all of the electricity from the project over the next 20 years, NPPD spokesman Mark Becker said.

The project requires permits for the NextEra Energy Resources from Gage and Jefferson county officials, Stengel said. If all goes well, the project could be done by the end of the year, generating $11 million in property taxes, which would be shared by the two counties.

Lease payments for the project, which could generate power beyond 20 years will be received by landowners. Underground cables are used by 426-foot-tall turbines which wouls be connected to an NPPD substation near Steele City.

A total of 10,000 megawatts, enough to power a city the size of Chicago will be generated by project. The Steele Flats Wind Project grew out of efforts last year by NPPD and the Omaha Public Power District to solicit proposals from wind developers for up to 75 megawatts of wind energy, Becker said.

The federal tax credit for wind projects will be renewed by Congress and meanwhile negotiations initiaited between NPPD and Steele Flats Wind Project. A 20-year agreement was inked by OPPD to buy 200 megawatts from the Prairie Breeze Wind Farm near Elgin in northeast Nebraska.

A total of 282 megawatts of wind generation is possessed by NPPD, when Steele Flats Wind Project is completed. The Columbus-based utility has a goal of having 10 percent of its power generation come from renewable resources by 2020 and the Steele Flats Wind Project puts it at 7.2 percent, Becker said.
