Dousing all stories regarding its break-down, the local Indonesian airline - Kartika Airlines has announced that it is on track to buy 30 Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ-100) from Russia worth US$900 million.
The airline\'s Commercial Director Aditya Wardhana has stated that they are on course to acquire the passenger jets and has plans to start the new fleet\'s operation to serve the eastern parts of the archipelago. He added, \"Everything is on the right track, no business plan has changed and our SIUAU [flight permit] is currently in the final stage. We will take delivery of several [SSJ-100] planes this year.\"
There were reports in media recently about United Aircraft Corporation’s loss of a big contract for the erection of the SSJ-100 passenger aircraft due to Kartika Airlines\' collapse.
Kartika had placed orders for the Russian regional jets in July 2010 during the Farnborough International Air Show in the UK.
The airline was the maiden buyer for the SSJ-100 passenger aircraft in the Southeast Asian region.
The media claimed that the contract with United Aircraft was not endorsed by the Indonesian authorities as a result of the carrier\'s failure to establish its financial capacity.
\"We have a clear business plan and everything is currently being processed by the Transportation Ministry,\" Aditya said.
Similarly, the Transportation Ministry Air Transportation Director Djoko Murjatmodjo has repeated the proclamation of the carrier\'s boss, and added that the aviation watchdog is reviewing all basic documents for Kartika\'s SIUAU.
He further said, \"We are just waiting for the final report on capital and assets from Kartika Airlines. After that, we are going to issue the permit.\" Djoko has added that Kartika has already tendered its complete business strategy for the next couple of years to the Transportation Ministry.
Kartika is not new in the Indonesian aviation business since it earlier operated domestic services in the early 2000s prior to suspension of its operations. The Transportation Ministry has revealed that carrier launched operations in 2001 from the country\'s main access Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and grounded its services in June 2010 due to suspension of its flying license.
It is essential for all airlines to acquire a new flying license prior to restart of services if they discontinue operations for over a year.
In a related development, another local carrier - Sky Aviation has recently collected the first of its 12 SSJ-100s, planned to be positioned in Makassar (South Sulawesi) to operate routes to Denpasar, Bali; Balikpapan, East Kalimantan; and Sorong, West Papua. The carrier is slated to start the aircraft’s first commercial operation on 10th March.
In last May, an SSJ-100 collided with Mount Salak (West Java) during an exhibition flight, which caused death of all 45 people on board.
