Indonesia,Singapore,United States : Collaborative effort to enhance rail systems in Indonesia

Publish Date : 15-Mar-2013

Operating for decades without major upgrades, the rail signaling and communication systems for Indonesia\'s railways now have a master plan for improvement thanks to a collaborative project effort among AECOM teams in Indonesia, Singapore and the United States.

Anticipating growing rail demand over the next five to 10 years, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI), the state-owned rail operator, appointed AECOM to create both technical and financial master plans that would help revamp the rail signaling and telecommunications infrastructure to improve safety, reliability and increase capacity. Funded by the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), the project team received special recognition from the U.S. ambassador to Indonesia, the U.S. commercial attaché and the chief financial officer of PT KAI.

In creating the master plans, AECOM analyzed the systems in place and recommended viable improvements to enhance reliability, maintainability and safety, and also undertook financial and economic analyses to determine an appropriate funding mechanism for the investment.

\"The successful completion of this project further strengthens our relationship with USTDA,\" said Thomas Gibson, AECOM\'s vice president, transit systems and services, Americas. \"We have also gained trust from a client who asked for us specifically through USTDA to develop plans for the Jakarta region. This effort has been an important step in allowing AECOM to become the consultant of choice of PT KAI for their infrastructure development going forward.\"

\"This project showcases our in-depth expertise in the transportation sector and highlights our collaborative efforts across business lines and geographies,\" added Peter C.S. Lee, executive vice president, Southeast Asia. \"Indonesia is a growth area for Southeast Asia and with our strong local team and global knowledge, AECOM is well-poised to provide our integrated services to support the country\'s infrastructure plans.\"
