Bayer CropScience Inc. (Philippines), the Pilipino wing of global Bayer CropScience, has announced that the company will make P40 million investment in the current year in order to enlarge the production capability of its hybrid rice seeds plant in Calauan, Laguna.
Multinational Bayer CropScience is the agricultural technology division of the Bayer Group.
The Head of Seeds at Bayer CropScience Philippines - Analen dela Rosa has stated that a bigger seed processing facility will have a production capacity of 50 metric tons (MT) a day, fivefold from the existing capability of 10 MT daily.
The arrangements for sorting, conditioning, treatment and packaging are parts of any seed processing facility.
Moreover, Bayer will put up a new breeding facility at the same location in order to make experiments on the new hybrid rice types for the domestic as well as Southeast Asian markets.
The company\'s official said, \"We will be testing a thousand varieties for the Asian markets, not just the Philippines.\"
The company\'s seed business has been increasing \"in the double digits\" since the past four years, according to dela Rosa.
She added, \"We are targeting to be the market leader by next year, that\'s why we\'re putting all these facilities to achieve this goal.\"
The Pilipino Government is promoting the utilization of hybrid rice seeds as part of its Food Staples Sufficiency Program (FSSP).
The country aims to accomplish self-reliance in rice production through making 20 million MT in the current year.
