Publish Date : 02-Apr-2013

On Friday, Newport News Shipbuilding received a $2.6 billion contract from the Navy to carry out a midlife refueling and overhaul of the carrier Abraham Lincoln. The contract was awarded a day after the ship\'s arrival at Newport News.

There has been a delay of almost six weeks in the overhaul as Congress was not successful in passing an appropriations bill in time to commence with the work.

Once in their 50-year lifespans, nuclear-powered aircraft carriers undergo a refueling and complex overhaul, where in the work includes refueling the reactors, repairing and upgrading the infrastructure, and modernizing the combat and communication systems.
