Telenor Group welcomes today's announcement by Myanmar authorities that the company has pre-qualified for the competition to win one of two nationwide telecommunications licenses.
Telenor is focused on the long-term development of Myanmar's telecommunications industry. The company will now study the terms and conditions of the license selection process as it prepares its bid documents. If Telenor is awarded a license, the company plans to leverage its experience from ownership in leading mobile operations in Thailand (dtac), Malaysia (DiGi), India (Uninor), Bangladesh (Grameenphone) and Pakistan (Telenor), in order to provide rapid delivery of high-quality mobile network and services throughout Myanmar.
"We have performed well in Asia due to the combination of our technical competence, our deep understanding of customers' demands and our experience working with governments and partners to deliver infrastructure and services that are locally tailored to meet each individual market's communications needs. We have pioneered mobile communications in Asia and we hope to bring our knowledge, experience and corporate values to Myanmar, helping to advance the country's telecommunications objectives, while positively impacting the lives of the people of Myanmar through the immense opportunities that mobile access provides," said Sigve Brekke, Executive Vice President and Head of Asian operations in Telenor Group.
16 years of experience in Asia
As one of the world's major mobile operators with close to 150 million mobile subscribers, Norway-based Telenor aims, if selected, to build on its 16 years of experience in providing innovative and affordable solutions in Asia to ensure that Myanmar reaps the benefits of communications in boosting social and economic development. The company would do that in the same open, transparent and collaborative manner that has been so important to its success in the other markets in which it operates.
Through its operations in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India, Telenor Group has gained solid experience in establishing successful mobile operations in greenfield markets. Telenor's unique distribution platforms in Asia have become the company's competitive advantage, enabling its local operations to connect millions of previously unconnected people across Asia with mobile communications services. In India, one of the world's most competitive markets, Uninor is among the fastest-growing mobile operators, offering reliable mobile services at affordable prices.
