Publish Date : 03-May-2013
On Tuesday, Pakistan and the Asian Development Bank signed an agreement on investment of $73 million aiming at the rehabilitation of the Pakpattan Canal and Suleimanki Barrage in Punjab.
The bank's country director for Pakistan, Werner Liepach, said, "The rehabilitation of Pakpattan and its linked canals, and installation of new gates at Suleimanki barrage will reduce water losses and will improve water delivery systems benefitting about 2.6 million people in four farming districts."
"The Pakpattan Canal and Suleimanki Barrage Improvement Project is part of the phased upgrading of Punjab's obsolete irrigation infrastructure and associated facilities. An efficient irrigation system is vital to maintain agricultural outputs and competitiveness. This project aims to rehabilitate the nearly century-old canals and barrages to ensure reliable water supply vital to boost the incomes of farming families in the country's breadbasket districts," he noted.
On annual basis, the water leakages that results through damaged gates of the Suleimanki Barrage amounts to nearly 267 million cubic meters.
High deterioration of Pakpattan Canal and its structures results in high losses and disorder in regulation of flows.
