A National Trust initiative to propagate up to 2,000 juvenile Gallipoli Oaks to be planted in Victorian primary school grounds during the ANZAC Centenary received $10,000 in funding today from the Victorian Coalition Government.
Minister for Veterans' Affairs Hugh Delahunty today visited Murndal, a property near Hamilton that is home to a Gallipoli Oak planted by a soldier in 1917, to announce the funding from the Veterans Council Grants Program 2012-2013 - Veterans Fund.
"Victorians are rightly proud of the service and sacrifice of all our diggers," Mr Delahunty said.
"The Gallipoli Oak is synonymous with Australia's First World War campaign. General Sir John Monash was one of many soldiers to send or bring back an acorn to Australia in remembrance of their time and their mates who perished during the tragic battles on the Gallipoli peninsula.
"Today there are a handful of these Gallipoli Oaks planted from acorns from the original tree at Murndal. This project will establish a new generation of Gallipoli Oaks at our primary schools that will ensure this important connection to our ANZACs lives on.
"In the lead up to the ANZAC Centenary these young Gallipoli Oak trees will help pass the baton and enable a new generation of Victorians to discover the ANZAC story and thereby develop a more personal understanding of our war-time history and of the sacrifices made by our veterans,†Mr Delahunty said.
Along with the trees, the project will include interpretive material for students that captures the story of the Gallipoli Oaks during World War One, the process of propagation, and an outline of Australia's enduring relationship with the Turkish people.
Mr Delahunty said the Veterans Council Grants Program 2012-2013 - Veterans Fund was a joint Coalition Government and Veterans Council-run program.
"I'd like to thank the project managers, the National Trust and partners for their efforts to grow and distribute the saplings and their commitment to honour all those who sacrificed so much for their country," Mr Delahunty said.
"Working together, we can ensure the legacy of our veterans is honoured, remembered and is passed on to a whole new generation in important times of remembrance like the ANZAC Centenary.
"I would encourage schools across Victoria to register for this fantastic project. By participating you will not only be doing your school proud but you will also be joining the rest of the world in commemorating the Centenary of the First World War," Mr Delahunty said.
