With an intension to make stronger collaboration among the two countries a joint declaration of new partnership is signed by visiting Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard with her Papua New Guinea (PNG) counterpart.

After meeting with PNG Prime Minister Peter O 'Neill, Gillard said, "This 2013 declaration points the way to a new level of cooperation based on mutual trust, respect and common values".
Gillard said, "We must build relationships that stand the test of time during the pressures and changes that accompany the Asian century".

The two countries moreover decided to improve defense cooperation by scheduling defense ministers meeting yearly.

Meanwhile, the Australian government will help PNG to improve its policing capability through the current PNG-Australia Policing Partnership program.

The policing program will include 19 Australian Federal Police personnel and four externally employed officers, at a cost of 56. 6 Million Australian dollars (57.17 million U.S. dollars) over 4 years.

Gillard said, "It's a model where police would be made available to participate in advisory roles".

It’s the initial official visit by Gillard to the Pacific island nation as prime minister, seen as an opportunity by the two governments to expand the association.
