The Colombo Port Expansion Project's construction work for establishing infrastructure to develop South Port area has come to a completion, the authorities said.
Construction work of the 5.2 kilometer main breakwater, 1.6 kilometer sub breakwater, access roads and the light house has now been accomplished.
Dredging and breakwater construction is included in this project, which is sufficient to accommodate three terminals, to be constructed sequentially. It includes the establishment of a new marine operations center, relocation of a submarine oil pipeline, provision of navigational aids, and construction of shore utilities.
The US$ 400 million project of infrastructure works is financed by Asian Development Bank and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), which is the largest ever mega-infrastructure development project undertaken by Sri Lanka.
1.5 billion rupees is the tax concession is granted by government. Sri Lanka is permitted by CPEP to comply with increasing demands of services in the international shipping industry in the Indian Ocean. The Colombo port situated on a major shipping route between east and west is a major port in the Asian region.
