Mongolia : Mongolian NUBIA Build Contract Awarded
Publish Date : 17-May-2013
The construction contract for a second international airport in Mongolia has been won by two Japanese firms.
Together, Mitsubishi Corporation and engineering group Chiyoda Corporation will build the new Mongolian airport, which will be located approximately 30 miles away from Ulan Bator - the capital city - at an altitude of 4,481 feet (1,366 metres) above sea level. They'll begin the build later on in 2013 and, according to a Chiyoda Corporation representative, be finished by October 2016.
Named 'Khoshigt Valley Airport' or 'New Ulaanbaatar International Airport' (NUBIA), the site will have an initial annual passenger capacity of two million but may ultimately be able to handle 10 million more.
NUBIA
NUBIA's key features will include an 11,811 foot (3,600 metre) long concrete runway, a passenger terminal covering an area of 33,000 square metres and a 24-hour air traffic control system with an all-weather capability.
It's expected that it'll take 43 months to construct the new Mongolian airport. It's also anticipated that, due to the typical seasonal weather patterns, during 15 of these months, no work will be able to be carried out at all.
Significantly, NUBIA will replace Chinggis Khaan International Airport, which is scheduled to be closed in 2017 - 60 years after it first opened. This presently handles approximately 900,000 passengers each year so, with its closure and NUBIA's inauguration, Mongolian air travel is set to get a massive boost.
Mongolian Airport Build Contract
'Take-offs and landings at the existing Chinggis Khaan International Airport, the only international airport in Mongolia at the moment, are greatly restricted due to the airport's proximity to the mountains and to climatic conditions', Mitsubishi explained in a statement on the Mongolian airport build contract announcement.
'Construction of the New Ulaanbaatar International airport will vastly increase the number of passengers arriving to Mongolia, thereby contributing to Mongolia's further economic growth.'
