Finland : Ruukki launches energy panels that produce solar power
Publish Date : 12-Jun-2013
Ruukki launches Ruukki solar panel, which produces solar power. Part of Ruukki's energy panel system, the panel is installed on walls and converts sunlight into electricity.
"To date, thanks to its air tightness, Ruukki's energy panel system has resulted in significant savings in customers' energy costs. Ruukki has now taken product development a step further with panels that also harness sunlight and convert it into electricity. Because the airtightness of the energy panel system is top class and the panels now produce energy, using the system can deliver savings of up to 20 per cent in energy costs," explains Jouni Metsamaki, SVP, Building Products at Ruukki.
Ruukki solar panel is based on modules that match the wall onto which they are installed. The surface of the modules is coated with a photoactive film that converts the sun's rays into energy. The modules are around 6 metres long and half a metre high.
Ruukki's energy panel system has resulted in significant savings in energy consumption compared to conventional sandwich panels. Ruukki is the only manufacturer whose energy panel system comes with an airtightness guarantee.
Energy panels are sandwich panels, prefabricated elements that consist of an inner insulation core between two steel sheet layers. Ruukki energy panels are used for energy-efficient buildings, especially industrial, storage, office and commercial premises. Ruukki energy panel is a special panel featuring an airtight joint structure and other detailed solutions, with installation, to make a wall structure airtight. Ruukki's energy panel system can also be used to improve the energy class of a building and to achieve more credits in LEED and BREEAM environmental certification systems. Ruukki energy panel was launched in spring 2011 and the more advanced energy panel system in summer 2012.
Spring 2013 saw Ruukki launch a flexibly designed roof for an ordinary single-family home to harness solar thermal energy. Ruukki was the first company in the world to launch such a roof, which is designed to generate energy both for domestic hot water and for heating the building itself.
