The Philippines-based Asian Development Bank (ADB) is willing to make investments in two big hydropower projects in Nepal, dubbed as Sunkoshi-II (1,110 MW) and Sunkoshi-III (536 MW).
The country has already received US$150 worth of soft loan pledge from the bank for developing the reservoir-kind of Tanahun hydropower project, which will have power generation capacity of 140-MW.
On Saturday, a source at the Department of Electricity Development (DoED) revealed, 'A team of the ADB completed field studies of the two projects this week.'
He added, 'The ADB and the DoED are also holding preliminary-level discussions on development of the projects.'
He has further revealed that the DoED has updated the ADB on its plans related to both the projects, which are based in Ramechhap district, just a couple of weeks before. He added, 'Since then, the ADB has conducted field studies.'
The DoED source has also disclosed that the final decision on the investment pattern and loan amount for these projects will be settled soon.
The Senior Divisional Engineer and Spokesman at the DoED - Gokarna Raj Pantha has validated the move, and added that the Manila-headquartered bank has given in-principal approval for the development of the two projects as well.
He further said, 'The DoED and the ADB will sit for negotiations in the near future.'
Pantha stated, 'The ADB is also interested in investing in the renewable energy sector in the region.'
The Government's Hydropower Master Plan has incorporated Sunkoshi-II and Sunkoshi-III projects, which are categorized as run of the river projects.
After providing soft loan commitment to the Tanahun hydropower project, the ADB has revealed its willingness to boost its investment in the hydropower division of Nepal, said Pantha.
The Government, in the interim, has been making assessments on eight other projects and these are: 48 MW Bheri Babai Project in Surkhet, 22MW Budhi Ganga in Accham, 8.27 MW Chepe Khola in Lamjung, and 5.78 MW Dotighad in Dadheldhura, 8.1 MW Ikhuwa Khola in Shankhusawa, 12 MW Kabeli-III in Taplejung, plus 12.25 MW Madi Khola in Rolpa and 400 MW Nalsyaugad Project in Jajarkot.
