The Political Officer of the European Union Delegation to Malawi - James Dolan has announced on Saturday in Mzuzu at the inauguration of the Peri-Urban Sanitation and Hygiene Project (PUSH) for Mzuzu City that the European Union (EU) has made €24 million (K12.8 billion) allocation in order to help Malawi to execute projects meant for supplying water and providing sanitation services to its people. This project will be beneficial for the residents of 15 districts and 7 cities and towns throughout the African nation.
Mr. Dolan stated, "The big proportion of these funds will be used for rural water supply and sanitation in 15 districts and the balance will be used by various NGOs for water supply and sanitation in peri-urban areas of seven cities and towns, including Mzuzu City."
He has further stated that the new support from the EU proves its pledge for maintainable development and wellbeing via acceptance of a 'holistic approach to economic and social development in communities residing in peri-urban areas of cities and towns of Malawi'.
The Mzuzu Council has partnered with Plan Malawi and Circle for Integrated Community Development (CICOD) to execute the ambitious mission.
The European Union is co-funding the Peri-Urban Sanitation and Hygiene Project for Mzuzu City under the 10th European Development Fund with a whopping K532 million, along with K177 million input from Plan Netherlands.
The project is intended to boost the Government of Malawi's endeavors for the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), mainly for the enhancement of the sanitation conditions in poor peri-urban and urban localities. Mr. Dolan has urged the project precipitants, comprising Plan Malawi, Mzuzu City Council and CICOD, to execute the project by the target of March 2017.
The CEO of the Mzuzu City Council - Thomas Chirwa has previously stated that the project will facilitate in the enhancement of the overall sanitation and waste management services, the areas that suffered much due to several hindrances. He added, "We hope with this project now indiscriminate disposal of waste and pollution will be a thing of the past."
The Mzuzu City MP - Professor Peter Mwanza has expressed his gratitude to the EU for its financial support to the project and added that the project area is one of his goals he wanted to realize during his term as the City MP.
He has also requested the City locals to support the scheme and to remain prepared to see the transformations together with the project.
The project will be favorable for 84,000 people from 19,090 households. Moreover, 14, 400 students from 9 schools in peri-urban areas of Masasa, Chibavi, Chibanja, Zolozolo, Luwinga and Mchengautuwa will reap the benefits of this venture.
The project aims to cover 98,300 people together with 17,800 students within the end of a 24-month period.
