United Kingdom : Mobile app innovation project roars ahead with extra EU funding boost

Publish Date : 05-Jul-2013

Finance Minister Jane Hutt has announced a L500,000 EU funding boost for a project which is helping Welsh businesses develop emerging mobile technologies.

CEMAS, the Centre of Excellence in Mobile Applications based at the University of South Wales, will receive the support from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government to further develop its support for innovative Welsh SMEs.

The announcement was made during the Finance Minister's visit to the Sports and Mobile 2013 event hosted by CEMAS and creative digital agency, Sequence, at Swansea's Liberty Stadium.

The Finance Minister was there to see the latest developments in sports related mobile phone applications, including the British and Irish Lions' official tour app, developed by Sequence, which is currently keeping fans throughout the world updated on the team's progress in Australia.

Finance Minister Jane Hutt said:

"We are committed to helping Welsh companies exploit new technologies and drive forward the digital economy. I am pleased that through our successful management of EU funds we have been able to support more businesses to innovate and seize new opportunities which, in turn, enable them to grow and access new markets."

CEMAS director Khalid Al-Begain said:

"We are delighted with the new funding which will allow us to extend our developer base so that we can support more businesses in the Convergence area of Wales.

"CEMAS' intensive activities to raise business awareness of the importance of adopting mobile technologies resulted in an increased pressure on our services and also generated higher demand for other mobile app development businesses in Wales.

"Our aim is to get all businesses in all sectors in Wales into the culture of innovation using mobile technologies."

Housed at the University's Treforest campus, CEMAS has already been backed with almost Ł2.5m from the EU's European Regional Development Fund.

Since being set up in 2011, CEMAS has supported more than 40 SMEs in the Convergence area of Wales and created over 20 apps.

One of the apps being showcased at the Sports Mobile event was UB Coach Rugby, which allows semi-pro and grass roots players to benefit from high quality analysis normally only enjoyed by elite professional players.

Having advised the likes of the Welsh, Irish and New Zealand rugby unions, as well as Premier League giants Manchester City, Gwendraeth Valley sports analyst Mark Davies wanted to share his expertise with a wider audience.

Mark didn't know how to turn his ideas into reality until his company, IMD Systems, was introduced to CEMAS.

Mark said:

"If we had not contacted CEMAS, we would not have been able to develop the programme, it's as simple as that.
