Canada : TELUS invests $600,000 to bring wireless service to the Island Highways near Cobble Hill

As part of a strategic partnership with the Province, TELUS has invested $600,000 to bring new wireless coverage to more than 8 kilometers of the Island Highway between Shawnigan Mill Bay Road and Lakeside Road.
The site located near the Rona in Cobble Hill is now live, providing service to a stretch of the Island Highway as well as homes and businesses in the Cobble Hill area.
"At TELUS, we know how important wireless services are, and continue to make significant investments in our networks to bring them to our customers on Vancouver Island and right across Canada," said Ray Lawson, TELUS general manager for Vancouver Island. "We heard from residents and the BC Ambulance Service that this section of our Island Highway was in need of crucial wireless services. Our significant investment gives motorists, local residents and businesses the convenience of making hands-free wireless calls along this stretch of highway, expands access to 911, and allows for great broadband service where it may not be possible to build wired Internet access."
The project is part of the 10-year Connecting British Columbia agreement signed with the Province of B.C. in 2011. Under the terms of the agreement TELUS will connect more than 1,700 kilometres of unconnected highways with wireless service.
"This expansion will benefit residents, businesses and travelers along this stretch in the Cowichan Valley region," said Technology, Innovation and Citizens' Services Minister Andrew Wilkinson. "The work we're doing together is improving safety along B.C.'s rural highways, and providing residents and businesses in these areas with the telecommunications connectivity necessary to help them earn a living and compete in the global economy."
This significant investment is part of $3 billion in infrastructure and facilities upgrades TELUS is making across British Columbia through 2014 and builds upon the $29 billion TELUS has already invested in operations and technology throughout the province since 2000.
