United Kingdom : BAM selected as a preferred bidder for L9m contract to construct UTC CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL
Publish Date : 06-Aug-2013
BAM Construction has emerged as preferred bidder for a contract worth Å9m to construct the new UTC Cambridge school.
The plans are for constructing a three-storey building with capacity to hold 670 students aged 14 to 19. The structure would feature five super labs on the top floor, accommodating 90 students each, with three capable of joining together to emulate large-scale research conditions.
Design division of BAM will be executing structural design along with specifying furniture, fittings and equipment, working together with architect Hawkins Brown.
Work is expected to begin during September 2013, and the UTC will begin functioning at the start of the 2014/15 academic year.
Cambridge's new university technical college will be mainly specialising in biomedical and environmental sciences and technologies. Plans would include sustainability features such as a combined heat and power unit to provide low-carbon energy; photovoltaic cells; and gravel beds to control rainwater run-off.
Construction of the UTC will be carried out next to the Å175m Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB).
BAM regional design manager Malcolm Boyd stated, "We are very excited to be back building science facilities in Cambridge. The LMB project helped us develop our designs for the science laboratories in the UTC, a key contribution to this important win for BAM."
