Cyprus : Cyprus, Israel and Greece sign MoU on cooperation in the fields of energy and water resources
Publish Date : 12-Aug-2013
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the fields of energy and water resources was signed today by the Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Yiorgos Lakkotrypis, the Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the State of Israel Mr. Silvan Shalom and the Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Yannis Maniatis. At the trilateral meeting, held at the "Filoxenia" Conference Center in Nicosia, the three Energy Ministers also agreed to issue a Joint Communique regarding the MoU, in which specific reference is made to the project for the electricity interconnection of Israel, Cyprus and Greece via a subsea cable, known as "EuroAsia Interconnector".
In his statement to the Press after the conclusion of the trilateral meeting, Mr. Lakkotrypis said: "This is a monumental moment for the cooperation between the three countries. Today we have concluded the three countries’ meeting with the signing of a MoU on energy and water resources. The MoU is a framework which will determine the number of activities that the countries have agreed to jointly pursue, such as the energy infrastructures and the security of energy supply, environmental protection and a number of other issues common for the three.
We also discussed today the potential project of interconnecting the three countries with an electric cable. We have reiterated our commitment to try to see and facilitate the project through, especially since it is a project provisionally approved as of Common Interest of the EU. Through this project we aim at lifting Cyprus’ energy isolation, something which will help the country become more competitive by introducing cheaper electricity.
I will once again welcome my colleagues and point out that we look forward to deepening and enhancing this cooperation".
