Philippines : AWARDING of P37.8-b plant contract postponed by Quezon Power
Publish Date : 27-Aug-2013
Quezon Power Philippines Ltd. has deferred the plan for giving the engineering, procurement and construction agreement for the 500-megawatt expansion of the current 460-MW coal-fired power plant in Mauban, Quezon by 2 months.
Instead of the original target of July the Quezon Power currently anticipated giving the EPC contract for the P37.8-billion project in September. The reason for the postponement was not declared by the company.
98 percent of Quezon Power which runs the 460-MW coal-fired power plant in Quezon is managed by Thailand's Electricity Generating Public Company Ltd.
The document showed, "Award EPC contract [is] estimated by September 2013. Design and construction to start June 2014 and target testing and commissioning by July 2017."
In June 2007 the Quezon Power obtained the environmental compliance certificate for the expansion. However was allowed an extension on May 31, 2012, which was valid until June 4, 2015.
The 500-MW expansion is at first likely to be completely working by March 2018.
Quezon Power Philippines managing director Frank Thiel earlier said the company was focusing on the expansion project.
Thiel said, "We'll be looking to share [facilities] with the first unit as opposed to building a completely new standalone facility… Our expectation is that we can make it a little more competitive because of that".
Egco was in discussions with Meralco for a joint venture for the planned 500-MW expansion even though no firm deal had been taken on.
