Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ) and Gulf Drilling International (GDI) have inked two new contracts for two rigs. QR750mn contracts were signed during a ceremony organised under the patronage of HE the Minister of Energy and Industry, Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada.
One contract is a two-year deal for the GDI jack-up drilling rig (B-341) and another contract is a three-year deal for a new GDI offshore accommodation jack-up rig. The signed contracts is the second and third major agreements between GDI and MOQ in 2013.
The firms during February 2013, signed a contract for the offshore jack-up drilling rig "Al Jassra", presently working in the Al Shaheen Field.
With this, the total agreements signed between MOQ and GDI during 2013, amounts to around QR1.56bn.
MOQ managing director Lewis Affleck, and GDI chief executive officer, Ibrahim J al-Othman signed the deals, in presence of Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, QP director (oil and gas ventures); Jakob Thomasen, Maersk Oil chief executive officer, and Sheikh Faisal bin Fahad al-Thani, MOQ deputy managing director.
Thomasen said, "In close partnership with Qatar Petroleum, Maersk Oil operates Qatar's largest offshore oil field, Al Shaheen. As a trusted and reliable operator that is committed to supporting the Qatar National vision of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Maersk Oil works closely with Qatari businesses to maximise local participation in its activities. Today's signing with GDI is testament to this commitment."
"Al Shaheen is one of the most complex fields in the world. More than 20 years of developing and operating the field alongside our partners QP, provides Maersk Oil with a unique level of experience and understanding of this challenging reservoir. Many more wells will be needed in the future to help successfully unlock the potential of the Al Shaheen field, and we are therefore very pleased to continue our work with GDI."
Al-Othman said, "Today's signing signifies another important milestone in the relationship between GDI and Maersk Oil Qatar. In recent months we have worked tirelessly together to bring Al Jassra safely into operation, while simultaneously identifying and maturing two additional, very significant, opportunities for GDI to work with Maersk Oil in the Al Shaheen field."
"This is truly a great achievement, and one that we are very proud of. GDI continues to grow and flourish as an organisation thanks guidance and support of our GDI board of directors and the professionalism of its employees and the high quality technical solutions that we offer to our clients."
