United States : ARCADIS to perform owner's engineering services for realization of thermal power plant in Amazonas, Brazil

Publish Date : 12-Oct-2013

ARCADIS, the leading pure play global engineering and consultancy firm, announced today that its Brazilian subsidiary, ARCADIS Logos, was selected by Amazonas Distribuidora de Energia S.A. (ADE) to perform owner's engineering services for the construction of a new natural gas fueled thermal power plant with a capacity of 583MW. Located near the city of Manaus, Amazonas, the new plant (named Mauá 3) will replace the current diesel-fueled thermal power plant. Total investment for the project will be approximately €350 million and the new plant should be operational in mid-2014. ARCADIS will work on the project for 27 months for a total value of €5 million.

ADE, a subsidiary of Eletrobras, generates and transmits the electrical energy for Amazonas State. In its role as owner's engineer in this project, ARCADIS Logos will ensure fulfillment of all contractual conditions during the development phase of the project. ADE has contracted a Brazilian contractor to build the plant in an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) model, and has contracted ARCADIS Logos to act as the owner's engineer with a scope of services that include review and validation of design & engineering, planning, supervision of health and safety, environmental aspects and construction, as well as quality control, and assistance during commissioning and trial operation. The plant will have two gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators and one steam turbine. It will be the biggest power plant to operate with natural gas in the Amazon region.

"ARCADIS Logos has performed design, engineering and/or managed the construction of 20% of the total capacity of thermal power plants in operation in the Brazil today, combined at more than 7,100 MW capacity, with fuels that vary from biomass, biogas, natural gas and coal. In addition it has also developed feasibility studies and basic design to several other projects that - if implemented - would deliver a combined capacity of up to 8,100 MW. The company also has extensive experience in hydropower projects. Through the Mauá 3 thermal power plant, ARCADIS Logos is, once again, playing a very important role in the country's continuous development, keeping its position as one of the leaders in thermal power plant design", said Manoel Antonio Avelino, CEO of ARCADIS Logos.
