Australia : Alliance secures Aboriginal horticultural project

Publish Date : 07-Nov-2013

The Kimberley Training Institute has struck a historic partnership with traditional land owners to help build a sustainable native fruit enterprise near Broome.

Training and Workforce Development Minister Terry Redman said the alliance would expand on a new concept in agronomy which combined traditional Aboriginal land use practices with conventional horticulture.

Mr Redman said the agreement between the institute and the Nyamba Buru Yawuru traditional owners would promote economic partnerships with Aboriginal groups across the Kimberley and was a historic moment for the region.

The Minister officially launched the alliance while visiting the Balu Buru Centre at 12 Mile today, saying the project had evolved from years of practical research carried out through hands-on training predominantly involving local Aboriginal people.

"This formal partnership will allow the groundbreaking work undertaken at Balu Buru to continue while involving more local Aboriginal students," he said.

"Part of the vision of this project is to further develop a new concept in horticulture known as ‘savannah enrichment' which aims to preserve natural biodiversity while establishing a commercially viable model."

Mr Redman said this model had potential as a new methodology under the Carbon Farming Initiative and would bring real benefits to the region as a whole.

"The initiatives at Balu Buru are also improving opportunities for students involved with the project to be part of groundbreaking research with leading national agencies, including the CSIRO," he said.

At the same time the skills they are developing will enable them to play a leading role in helping remote communities capitalise on this growing industry.
