Publish Date : 03-Dec-2013

A source in the oil and gas market has revealed that the move to select the main contractors under the Phase - 2 of the Shah Deniz field project within the Azerbaijani part of the Caspian Sea is almost completed.

The source has further disclosed that the finalization process will be taken place in early part of next year and afterward the contract signing procedure with main contractors, who will handle construction works, will be initiated.

The source added, "First of all it concerns the contractors, who will be engaged in the platform's construction, establishment of the necessary underwater infrastructures and others. The project is very large and contractors will be required to prepare for the beginning of constructions."

The construction works under the Phase – 2 of Shah Deniz will be launched in next July.

The project will see construction of two new offshore platforms, which will be joined by a bridge; digging of 26 submerged wells with two semi-submersible drilling rigs; installation of submerged pipelines of 500-km at a water depth of 550 meters, establishment of other facilities to facilitate exports to Azerbaijan and Georgia and expansion of Sangachal terminal.

The Shah Deniz field is estimated to have gas reserves of 1.2 trillion cubic meters.

The signing of the contract to develop the offshore Shah Deniz field, which is operated by BP with a 25.5% stake, had taken place long ago on 4th June, 1996. The field's other stakeholders include Statoil (25.5%), NICO (10%), Total (10 %), and Lukoil (10%), plus TPAO (9%) in addition to SOCAR (10%).

According to plans, Turkey is to receive 6 billion cubic meters of gas generated from the Phase – 2 of the field project, while Europe will get 10 billion cubic meters.
