Bangladesh,India,Myanmar : BANGLADESH decides to export internet bandwidth
Publish Date : 18-Feb-2014
The government decided to export 40% of total internet bandwidth capacity of its lone undersea cable to neighbouring countries through lease or sale, as the lifetime of the cable ends in the next 12 years.
Bangladesh can earn Tk 60 crore a year from lease.
The cable has a bandwidth capacity of 200 gbps, with 20% consumed for voice and data use.
The decision was made at a meeting with the telecom regulator and ministers of foreign and finance. The managing director of Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd., said "we will go for both sale and lease as we have received multiple proposals from different countries."
In case of lease, the agreements will be for one or two years. Bangladesh has 6 terrestrial cables that are connected globally through India. These cables provide bandwidth support for both data and voice markets.
India has shown interest to buy 100 gbps of the capacity for its northeastern states, while Myanmar requested for 50 gbps. Singapore, Malaysia and Italy have also shown their interest.
Bangladesh may export the bandwidth to India through a lease agreement, while decisions on other proposals are yet to be taken, also the BSCC will start processing the proposals, soon.
The country will lay at least 50 km of optical fibre cables from Brahmanbaria to Akhaura border to export bandwidth to India.
Bangladesh will get another 1,400 gbps of bandwidth capacity by 2016 when a new submarine cable, SEA-ME-WE-5, will be installed. The existing undersea cable, SEA-ME-WE-4, was built 8-years ago for about Tk 245 crore.
