On Thursday February 27, the local government in Al Basra has desclosed that it contracted with a Kuwaiti company, which would implement a 207 billion Dinar worth project consisting of cleaning the province's capital (Al Basra) from the trash for a 3-year term.
As per Head of Planning and Development authority in the province Abdul Baqi Khalaf Al Sulayti, "The local government has chosen the Kuwait National Cleaning Company to handle the cleaning process throughout the province's capital for a period of 3 years. The company has been chosen according to the legal procedure among 6 other companies from Germany, Lebanon, Turkey and Iran. The Kuwaiti company's offer was the best. This project's cost amounts to 207 billion Iraqi Dinars", mentioned head of the commission adding that "the local government sent 2 weeks ago a demand to the economic committee in the Ministerial Council to acquire the approval of the project. The law stipulates that the commission must reply to the demand in less than 14 days and in case it did not reply this would mean that the project is approved. Consequently a contract can be signed with the Kuwaiti company during the upcoming week".
"The project's tender has been put after learning from the experience of other Gulf regions such as Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Manama", said the Governor's advisor for services, Mohamad Jaafar. He clarified that: "Al Basra's Governor Majed Al Nasrawi reiterated on numerous occasions the importance of dealing with the company according to standards of quality, timely delivery and cleanliness instead of the weight of garbage collected and buried in landfills. The latter approach has proven to be a failure when it was adopted with Gifra, the Turkish cleaning company in 2010".
As for the fate of thousands of Iraqi employees who work on a daily basis in Al Basra's Municipality, the Governor's consultant said: "The Kuwaiti company agreed to employ many among them", adding that "the remaining will sign contracts with the local government to work in public schools and certain sanitary centers".
As per head of the services commission in Al Basra's provincial council, Jawad Al Abbas Al Imara, "Al Basra needs a specialized non-Iraqi company to deal with the garbage that recently accumulated when the local municipality couldn't handle it. The Kuwaiti company who won the tender will not only remove the garbage, but also work on beautifying the sidewalks, the green spaces and the public parks".
