The Nigerian Federal Government has been charting strategy for the development of an oil refinery in Walvis Bay in partnership with the Republic of Namibia.
The move is intended at optimizing the energy collaboration involving the two nations and the development has taken place during the Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan’s meeting with his Namibian counterpart Hifikepunye Pohamba just in recent times.
The meeting between the two Presidents has taken place during Jonathan’s two-day official trip to Namibia.
The release of a joint media statement by the two countries on the State visit in Windhoek, Namibia, has made these revelations.
According to the statement, the planned oil refinery will be set up through private finances only.
Both the State Heads have requested the private sector of Nigeria and Namibia to make efforts to facilitate on-time accomplishment of the joint oil refinery venture.
They have also lauded the arrangement of a business meeting involving the private sector stakeholders of the two nations on the sidelines of the State visit and have requested them to tap the available rich business openings, and to maximize trade and business amid these two nations.
Moreover, the Federal Government has decided to give training to the Namibian diplomats at the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy. It has also decided to send volunteer healthcare professionals to Namibia as part of the Technical Aid Corps (TAC) Scheme.
Including these deals, overall 11 MoUs have been inked by Nigeria and Namibia. The MoU have been signed for expanding and reinforcing the mutual ties between the two countries.
The new MoU list also includes agreement on youth development, bilateral air service agreement and accord on exemption of visa obligations for the diplomatic and official passport holders and extradition treaty.
The leaders of Nigeria and Namibia have also signed collaboration agreement in the legal space, pact on mutual legal support in criminal cases and across geology, mining, mineral processing and metallurgy sectors.
Treaty on trade, investment and collaboration in the area of economy as well as tourism sectors had also been inked between the two nations.
