Japan : ORIX Begins Developing Solar Power Generation Projects Totaling 425 MW

Publish Date : 09-Apr-2014

ORIX Corporation, a leading integrated financial services group, announced today that it has started generating power at 67 solar power plants with a combined maximum output of 66.7 MW (66,700 kW). These plants are part of a larger development that ORIX started by the end of the previous fiscal year (the fiscal year ended March, 2014) in its solar power generation business, aiming to develop a 214 sites across Japan with a combined maximum output of 425.1 MW (425,100 kW).

In the mega-solar power generation business, ORIX has started developing plants at 66 sites across Japan with a combined maximum output of 356.2 MW (356,200 kW). Currently, 17 of these projects have started operation, with a combined maximum output of 41.3 MW (41,300 kW).

In the rooftop solar power generation business, which utilizes the roofs of large facilities owned by companies, local governments and others, ORIX has started installing systems at 148 locations in all, with a combined maximum output of 68.9 MW (68,900 kW). Currently, 50 of these sites have started operation, with a combined maximum output of 25.4 MW (25,400 kW).

These projects are expected to generate approximately 465,210,000 kWh annually (equivalent to the power consumption of approximately 129,200 ordinary households).

ORIX has been advancing its projects rapidly, aiming to develop power plants with a combined maximum output of 300 MW in 3 years from the fiscal year ended March 31, 2013 in its mega-solar power generation business, and install systems in its rooftop solar power generation business with a combined maximum output of 100 MW over the same period. As a result, ORIX has achieved its target for the mega-solar business one year ahead of schedule, and will continue development going forward.

ORIX is developing a wide-ranging energy business extending from power generation to supply and energy conservation. The power generation business uses other forms of renewable energy in addition to solar power such as geothermal energy, wind power, and biomass. Meanwhile the power supply business includes the energy trading business and bulk electric power purchasing business for condominiums. Other energy-related businesses include energy-conservation service businesses such as ESCO (Energy Service Company) and a storage battery rental service business.

Going forward, ORIX will continue to actively develop renewable energy and other energy-related businesses, as well as aim to provide new added value to customers.
