SAUDI ARABIA : SEC inks$1.2bn contract for new power plant in Shoaiba

The Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) has inked a $1.2bn contract for constructing a new 1,238MW power plant in Shoaiba, around 120km south of the Red Sea port city of Jeddah. The company has not revealed the name of the contractor who has won the contract.

According to SEC, the new plant will provide power to the Western Province of the country and will even assure adequate power supply to all subscribers in Makkah and Madinah. This plant will be put to service within 35 months, and will be connected with the 380KV network of the company.

Ali Al-Barrak CEO SEC stated that the company had raised its generating capacity from 25,790MW in 2000 to 51,250MW by August 2011. He added, “We have decided to implement a number of power generation and distribution projects in different parts of the Kingdom to strengthen the company’s capacity.”
