GERMANY : Rose-Hulman receives $27.8M software grant from Siemens

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has received a $27.8 million software grant, from Siemens PLM Software for better providing better training tools. The grants will also support students to design a car for the U.S. Department of Energys vehicle development competition called \"EcoCAR2: Plugging Into the Future.\"
Rickey McCurry, Rose-Hulman vice president for institutional advancement said, “Its a banner day for us. It allows our students to be on the very cutting edge of engineering technology.” Rose-Hulman president Matt Branam said that the software grant will make Rose-Hulman graduates more competitive in the global marketplace.
The grant covers PLM (product lifecycle management) software. Senior director of partner strategy for Siemens PLM Software, Bill Boswell said that the donation will give Rose-Hulman and its students access to the same software being used by more than 68,000 companies around the world in such industries as automotive, heavy equipment and aerospace.
Associate professor of mechanical engineering and director of Rose-Hulmans Advanced Transportation Systems program, Zac Chambers said that the benefit of PLM software \"is that it helps you design and bring products to market faster.”
He said, “Rather than spending time making prototypes and trying to figure out how to manufacture them in the real world, you use the PLM product to make virtual prototypes. You can cut down the development time of a product by almost 50 percent going from idea to market.”
